Inspecting and Cleaning Outdoor Furniture for Summer Use

Your outdoor furniture is an important part of creating an inviting patio or deck. Routine cleaning and inspecting keep these pieces looking great all summer and can extend their lifespan.

Wood furniture

Wood furniture is easily cleaned by wiping it with a soft cloth. Wash dirtier surfaces with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Rinse them completely, and allow them to dry thoroughly before using. Applying a wood stain or sealant will protect these pieces from the elements.

Plastic furniture

Plastic furniture is affordable, but it requires some special care to stay looking good. Use your garden hose to get rid of loose dirt. Follow this with warm, soapy water to remove the grime. Rinse thoroughly, and let these pieces air dry. Regular cleaning will reduce mold and mildew.

Steel furniture

Steel furniture can also be wiped with a damp cloth to keep it clean. Use mild, soapy water for tougher dirt and grime. Protect your steel furniture by using a rust-resistant finishing spray after thoroughly cleaning it.

Aluminum furniture

Once again, a damp cloth can be used to remove dust. Soapy water will take care of excessive dirt and grime, but don't use brushes or abrasive cleaners. Aluminum is easily scratched. Use car wax to protect these surfaces after you finish cleaning them.

Wrought iron furniture

Start with a damp cloth to remove dust. Get rid of the rust with sandpaper or a metal brush. Then, use soapy water to thoroughly clean each piece. You’ll need to apply a rust-resistant finishing spray afterward.

Teak furniture

A soft cloth will remove most dirt from teak pieces. Mild soapy water and a soft brush can be used for stubborn grime. Rinse with water and allow it to dry completely. You’ll need to use a special teak oil annually. This will protect it from the elements and keep the color vivid.

Special care for fabric

Many pieces of outdoor furniture have fabric seats, backs, or cushions. Vacuum dirt and debris from these surfaces. You can spot-clean stains by using either mild soapy water or a cleaner that is specifically formulated for fabrics. For a deep clean, place cushion covers in the washing machine. Follow the manufacturer’s directions carefully to avoid damaging the material.

General maintenance and inspections

It’s important to do an annual inspection of your outdoor furniture each spring. Watch for loose screws and bolts, and tighten any that you find. Look for damage that needs to be repaired, too. This ensures that your patio furniture is ready for summer. During the hotter months, be sure to cover these pieces during storms. You also need to wipe up spills immediately to avoid stains.

By cleaning and inspecting your outdoor furniture regularly, you can keep these pieces beautiful and functional for years to come. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram for more summertime tips.
