Insight Into Bedroom Layouts

The bedroom is a sanctuary. It's a place where you can rest and get rejuvenated, so it's one of the most important rooms in the home. If you're moving into a new place or are planning on making changes to your existing bedroom, there are many options to consider in terms of how you place your furniture and lighting. We've included some ideas that you might want to think about.

For adults

Adults will likely have a queen- or king-sized bed in their bedrooms. A couple would need space on either side of the bed so that both people can get in and out easily. When considering where to place the bed, it's a good idea to position it in a place that offers you a view of the door. Usually, this means placing it diagonal to the door so that when you walk into the room, you don't run straight into the bed.

The traditional layout would be to have the bed flanked by two nightstands. Some alternative ideas could be to use floating nightstands, giving the room a more minimalist look. You could also raise the bed and have storage underneath it, add open shelving above the bed, or add a console table or a row of shorter bookcases directly behind the bed. These ideas might work for a smaller bedroom.

For kids

Rooms for kids can have more flexibility since many children sleep on twin-sized beds. A twin bed can be pushed directly up against a wall to open up some floor space, and pushing it up into a corner would create an even more cozy atmosphere. Many kids like playing on the floor, so putting a nice plush rug or some bean bag chairs right in the middle of the room can make it more inviting.

You might consider lofting up the bed to create more functional space below. Some children would love having a private space under their beds to play, create, or read. If you do prefer a traditional look, you can certainly feel free to place the bed so that there's space on either side of it. Having cubbies, drawers, and other storage solutions can help your children keep their things organized.

Lighting ideas

Lighting can be an essential part of a bedroom layout. The right kind of lighting can create a calming environment while providing enough illumination for you to get some reading done or check out your wardrobe. If you're short on space, consider hanging pendant lighting. This can free up your floor space. Also, wall sconces could be perfect when positioned right above your nightstands on either side of the bed.
