Unique Concrete Paver Ideas to Enhance Your Outdoor Living Area
In the past, many people thought of concrete pavers as square or rectangular blocks that were uninspiring and even unattractive. Dull and gray, old-fashioned concrete pavers were less expensive than brick or stone. They were easy to install but made to be simply functional. They were good to walk on and support patio furniture. Now, concrete has evolved, and there’s a wealth of unique paver ideas to beautify your property. Here are some of them.
Use grass or ground covers with concrete pavers
Instead of using grout to separate concrete pavers, you might think of grass, moss, or other ground covers. The hardness and neutral color of the concrete contrast nicely with the soft green of grass or moss or the pinks, blues, or yellows of tiny flowers such as those of creeping thyme. Another pattern is a grouping of large concrete pavers with grout or gravel between them set off by strips of grass or moss.
Use different shades of gray
If you use gray concrete pavers, they don’t all have to be the same shade. This is an especially good idea if you are paving a large area such as your driveway and the garage apron. Imagine pavers that range from nearly white to dove gray to charcoal gray arranged in a random, eye-catching pattern. Since even this can be a little monotonous in a large area, break up the pattern at intervals with single, straight or curved lines of pavers of one shade of gray.
Pavers, flagstones, and gravel
One idea is a traditional rectangle or square of patio pavers surrounded by flagstones and gravel. This creates a contrast between a strict geometric shape and more natural groupings.
Concrete pavers laid in concrete
Another idea is to pour an area of dark or light concrete and decorate it with pavers of contrasting darker or paler concrete. Allow a good amount of the concrete bed to show between the pavers for an interesting windowpane effect. Another idea is to lay a concrete bed and set large, uniformly spaced pavers into it to resemble stepping stones.
Circular pavers
Cement pavers arranged in a circular pattern are just the thing for a similarly shaped recreation area in the backyard. They can begin around a firepit or a curved wall and spread outward in concentric circles.
Colorful patterns
Pavers can be dyed or stained in a variety of colors, and these colorful pavers can be laid on a patio floor in ways that resemble the tessellated patterns on the floors of ancient Roman houses. You can even incorporate your family’s coat of arms.
Interesting textures
Concrete can now be in all kinds of colors, but it can also be textured. These textures range from a glasslike smoothness to a roughness that mimics natural stone.
