The Best Home Lighting

If you are trying to decide what type of lighting to use in your home, first think about the kind of mood you want to feel in each room.

For example, you will likely want to feel relaxed in your bedroom, so a softer light would be your best bet. In your kitchen, you may want a bright light and light fixtures that are bright and colorful. Since you spend a lot of your time preparing meals in the kitchen, you want to feel energized when you are in it.

The foyer should offer a welcoming and even dramatic entrance to visitors. You can still go bold if you have a small space to work with but try a smaller light option, like a mini-chandelier.

If you have a bigger space to illuminate, add a cute table lamp on a side table. Your living room will likely be a bigger area of your home, so you will need to layer your lighting, especially if you don't have any ceiling lights. Premier Lighting is a great place to start if you are looking for some lighting inspiration.

You can get creative and add mini lights to a clear vase to light up those dark corners. If you enjoy reading in a comfy chair, be sure to have a table nearby with a small lamp or just add a floor lamp.

Stick to the plan

Of course, whatever you decide to run with will have to coincide with the rest of the décor in your house.

Just because you love something doesn't mean that it will flow with the look of your home. Unless your entire home is purposely mis-matched, you will want to stick to a general theme.

The boundaries of your "theme" can bend a little, but you don't want to veer too far off and create a somewhat unkempt appearance.

Layer your lighting

When it comes to lighting, there are actually three different "layers" of light. There is ambient light that is your basic and necessary lighting. It is normally what you will get out of your ceiling light, including your overhead fan, wall and track lighting, and wall sconces.

Next, you have task lighting, which is your utilitarian source of light to see what you are doing in that particular room. Task lighting can include an under cabinet, track, and vanity light.

Then there is accent lighting. Accent lighting is typically used to illuminate those dark corners of the room or highlight a painting over a fireplace.

Get inspired

Unless you have a clear picture in your mind of what you want your home to look like, it can be very helpful to seek out a little inspiration.

Check out decorating magazines, binge-watch home renovation episodes, or you can even hire an interior designer.

You should also choose light fixtures that you absolutely love because you want your home to be your happy place, filled with things that reflect your personality and sense of style.

But you also want it all to look pulled-together, which is where those decorating tips come into play.
