Signs Your Windows Need to Be Replaced

Windows now come in dozens of styles and colors that match any type of home. Though you might think that only older homes would benefit from new windows, they can benefit even modern homes built in the last few years. They can help you save on heating and cooling bills and block noises that come from nearby streets and yards. Check out some of the biggest signs you need new windows.

Visible signs of damage

Now is a good time to take a look at your windows and examine them for signs of damage. Those signs include:

  • Broken wood in the frames

  • Cracks or chips in the glass

  • Missing panes

  • Swollen pieces

If you can see any visible signs of damage in or around your windows, it's time to replace them.

They don't work

Many homes in Kentucky feature single-hung or double-hung windows. You can slide the windows up and down to let in more natural light and air or block that air. Other windows swing open. You should replace your windows when they no longer work the way they should. The windows might stick in place and not move or only move a few inches.

High bills

Your thermostat allows you to adjust the heat inside your home when the temperature outside drops. The problem is that you may need to rely on your thermostat more than you would like because of drafts around your windows. Try lighting a candle and standing close to your window. If any air comes through that causes the flame to move in one direction or go out, you know that your window has a draft. While window insulation kits come in handy, replacing your windows will save you more money in the long run.

Trapped water

Another sign that it's time for new windows is when you see trapped water in the glass panes. That moisture tells you that the window's seal no longer works and that it isn't airtight. As the temperature changes, that moisture can lead to mold or mildew. The only way to prevent the problem is with a new window.

Loud Noises

Windows usually act as soundproofing to help you avoid some of the sounds found outside. A common sign you should replace your windows is when you hear loud noises. This is more common among older homes than newer homes. Older homes often have windows that use just a single piece of glass. The new double-pane windows offer more soundproofing as well as energy efficiency.
