Signs Your HVAC Needs to Be Replaced

You count on your HVAC system to keep you cool or warm when you need it. However, there may come a time you'll have to replace it. Here are some common signs that indicate when you may need to replace your system.

1. It is more than 10 years old

While modern HVAC systems are built better, the parts commonly start wearing out after 10 years. Older units have outdated technology and use a discontinued freon called R22 that is known to negatively impact our ozone layer.

Getting your unit replaced by a company like decrease pollutants in your home. Energy Star reports replacing an older unit may save you as much as 20% on heating and cooling costs. If you don't know how old your unit is, look for a metal nameplate that should have a serial number.

2. Your energy bills have increased

Older systems use more energy than newer systems to reach the desired temperature, which raises energy bills. While increased energy bills are common at certain times of the year, they should not change much.

As AC units age, they are affected by the Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio, or the energy usage for one year. The SEER points decrease annually, meaning a loss of 9% of energy efficiency per point on older units.

3. Your unit needs constant repairs

Some repairs are to be expected with a unit, but if it becomes frequent, consider a replacement. Sometimes, the cost and labor to replace parts in older systems cost more than the unit is worth.

If you can't decide, the repair costs should not exceed half of what a new unit would cost. It is often more cost-efficient and time-saving to replace it when repairs become extensive on older systems.

4. Unusual sounds and smells

Dust burning is a usual smell coming from a unit, but it may indicate a more serious issue. If the unit consistently smells like rotten eggs, exhaust fumes, or burnt wire, it may need replacing.

A unit commonly makes noises when it comes on, but otherwise, it shouldn't make odd sounds. If it constantly rattles, bangs, squeaks, or hums, and repairs are not effective, consider a replacement.

5. The house isn't comfortable

If you notice your home isn't as warm or cool as you'd like, the unit could be wearing out. While temperature imbalances are common with older systems, the unit may be the wrong size. If the system is the wrong size, it may cause constant running, short cycling, and poor air quality.

In some cases, getting a pro to replace the entire unit is the sensible solution. For more tips and ideas like these, visit us on Facebook.
