How Many Shingles Does Your Roof Need?
If you take good care of your roof, it will last you a long time. Your roof will protect you and your home from high winds, rain, and snow. It can also keep your indoor climate solvent regardless of the weather.
But wear and tear can damage your roof over time. When this happens, it's time to think about replacing your shingles. This requires accuracy because you need to know how many shingles your roof needs. It's important to know the exact number of shingles you'll need before you begin a roof renovation project.
Does roof size matter?
When it comes to determining the number of shingles you'll need, roof size matters. Roof size is measured in square feet. You'll need to calculate the total size in square feet to determine the exact number of shingles you'll need for a renovation.
Calculating by size and roof type
There are two main roof styles used by most homeowners:
Single-plane shed roof
Double-plane gable roof
A single-plane shed roof is characterized by one side that slopes downward at an angle. Because it has only one plane, the shed roof is easier to measure. You can calculate the total size, in square feet, by using this simple formula:
A x B, where A = length and B = width
Example: Find the total amount, in square feet, of a shed roof with a length of 50 feet and a width of 40 feet. Let A = 50 feet and B = 40 feet. So, A X B
= 50 X 40 = 2,000 square feet total. The square footage for this roof is 2,000.
Because a double-plane gable roof has two slopes, you'll need to calculate more square footage. This requires multiplying the length and width then adding the results. The following example illustrates this:
Plane 1 = A X B = 50 X 40 = 2,000
Plane 2 = A X B = 50 X 40 = 2,000
Then, add the products:
Plane 1 + Plane 2 = 2,000 + 2,000 = 4,000 square feet
These calculations are the first step in getting the correct number of shingles for your new roof.
Calculating roof size: the next step
The next step is to determine the number of shingle squares you'll need for a roof renovation. To do this, consider the area of a roofing square, which is 100 square feet. You should divide the total amount of roofing size by 100.
A roof that's 2,000 square feet will need 20 squares of shingles total. Since shingles come in bundles of three, you would need to multiply 20 by that number. This would give you 60 bundles of shingles.
