Flushing Your Toilet

Toilets may seem like they're similar to trash cans. After all, you flush them, and everything seems to magically disappear. The reality, though, is that toilets need to be treated gently in order for them to keep working properly. Only toilet paper and human waste should be flushed down the toilet. Anything else needs to be tossed into an actual garbage can.

So many things can cause problems with toilets

Sometimes, it seems like a toilet is invincible, but it's really not. To make sure no problems arise with your drain or sewer system, you just need to remember a basic rule. If it's not toilet paper or something that comes out of your body, this item shouldn't be flushed down the toilet.

This means that paper towels, bandages, wipes, floss, tissue, and feminine hygiene items don't belong in the toilet. Neither do contact lenses, cotton swabs and balls, diapers, or automotive fluids. As you can imagine, the list can be quite extensive. If you ask a local plumber about what's been found down a drain, you might be surprised at some of the things that people have tried to flush.

When you have a clogged toilet, you obviously can't continue to use it until the problem is fixed. There could also be problems further down the line in the sewer system. This is definitely an area in which none of us want to experience issues. Just keep a trash can in the bathroom so no one is tempted to use the toilet for certain items.

Still having trouble with flushing?

Even if you do stick to the rules in terms of what you can flush, you might still have some problems with flushing. Perhaps it's time for an upgrade to your toilets. There are newer models that are high-efficiency versions. They use less water when flushing, but when dealing with solid waste, they'll use enough water to get the job done. You can indicate how much water you need to flush your waste by using either the first or second button.

Some people prefer taller toilets that make it easier to sit down and get back up again. When having new toilets installed, you could consider upgrading other things in your bathroom, too. This might be a good time to  install new hardware, upgrade your lights, or have your cabinets repainted. Little things can make a big difference, and you may want your new toilet to be in a more modern space.
