Choosing the Right Contractor

If you're about to go through a major renovation on your home, the first decision you'll need to make is who will be doing the work. If you want something done quickly and correctly, hiring a contractor is likely your best bet. Selecting a new home improvement contractor can seem daunting due to the number of options available. From a fully renovated bathroom from Clear Choice Bath to a closet fit for a king and queen from Closet Factory to a new landscape from Growing Environments—whatever project you're planning, these nine tips make finding someone great easy!

1. Check their license and insurance

You don't want to hire someone who doesn't have the necessary paperwork, as it could result in costly lawsuits if they're involved in an accident on your property. You should likewise make sure that any contractor you hire carries liability and workers' compensation insurance policies for all employees. Otherwise, if something goes wrong or a worker is injured, you could be held liable.

2. Make sure they have a good track record

You'll want to make sure that the company has been in business for at least five years, as this demonstrates its ability to survive and grow over time.

3. Ensure they have a great reputation

You can find out how well-regarded your potential contractor is by asking for references from past clients and listening to their experiences with the company. You'll also want to check them out on social media, where you may be able to find testimonials from people who have used their services in the past or reviews from other clients.

4. Ask for a detailed proposal

You should never hire someone without seeing what they plan to do and how much it will cost you first. Before hiring anyone, ask them to give you an in-depth estimate of all the work that needs to be done as well as the price. Make sure there are no hidden fees or charges included with their proposals.

5. Get it in writing

No matter how good the sales pitch is, you should never sign a contract unless you're sure that they can do what they say and are willing to put everything in writing. Legitimate contractors will be more than happy to provide documentation outlining all of their services for your review.

6. Trust your gut

When you first meet with a contractor, don't be afraid to ask yourself if they seem trustworthy or not. If something seems off about them from the beginning, it's okay to walk away and find someone else.

7. Don't go with the lowest bidder

While it's tempting to pick the cheapest option, you might end up regretting this decision in the long run. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is! Make sure that all prospective contractors undergo extensive background checks and ask for references before making your final choice. It's better to pay a bit more for someone reliable than risk paying less only to have the work done poorly—or not at all.

8. Don't pay in full up front

Any reputable business will want some deposit or guarantee that they'll be paid for their services, but this amount should only account for a small percentage of the total cost. Avoid anyone who asks for more than two-thirds of the total price up front.

9. Don't hire someone who wants to use your own supplies

If a contractor is asking for permission to get their hands on paint, tools, or other materials that are already in your home, then they're not the person you should be working with.
