Chic Holiday Decor: Stylish Ideas for Your Home This Season

It's time to start decking the halls again. While this normally means a nice Christmas tree and the usual trimmings, there's something to be said for being creative. Read on to discover some ideas to remember when decorating for the holidays.

Create a department store-worthy window

Give Macy's a little competition with a dazzling window display this holiday season. Achieve this goal with a table peppered with holiday decorations or a window with lights and other festive features. If your windows were professionally cleaned this past summer, your Christmas display will look even better!

Swap out art

Change the artwork in your home from summer pieces to winter creations. Doing so creates a subtle Christmas vibe. You don't necessarily need to make the art holiday-related. It can be something as simple as winter scenes or darker tones.

Create a focal point

Whether it's your fireplace or a corner of your room, pick a focal point for your holiday decorations. This is where you put the fanciest decorations. Everything else supports the focal point.

Create a nice wreath

You can never have enough wreaths. Go beyond the expected and create a wreath that stands out. You can do this with a base wreath or a wreath template or mold you can buy from any craft store. Once you do this, take the following steps:

  • Forage for vines and stems, plus other textural elements like berries or eucalyptus to add to your wreath.

  • Wrap and weave the vines throughout the wreath.

  • Trim down foraged stems and add foliage to the existing wreath.

Pick a theme for your Christmas tree

Most people get into the habit of putting all their decorations on the tree every year. Instead, pick a theme for your tree. It can be based on colors that go well together for the holidays, like silver and gold or red and green. Or it can be based on broader themes like the military or American history.

Put decorations in unexpected places

The kitchen is often overlooked when it comes time to decorate. Add some yuletide fun to this space with ribbons and other festive touches like holiday dishtowels or lights. You can do something similar with your bathrooms and laundry room.

Trim your light fixtures

Not every room needs your standard holiday touchup. Instead, add festive touches like wreaths or garlands to your light fixtures. You'll create an interesting focal point in each room.

Install festive porch lights

Switch up your traditional porch lights with stylish lights that glow in holiday colors. You can even use LED lights or change bulbs to create a festive mood. Mood lighting adds to the holiday magic. Other ideas to consider include:

  • Tiny trees

  • Holiday colored baubles in bowls

  • A spruced-up spice board with holiday spices and a few festive touches around the edges
